About Us
What is Scoopl?
Scoopl is where you discover places you love from a community you trust. Share experiences, recommendations, and scoops of your favourite places and discover the places your friends, family, and neighbours love. Scoopl adds up all of these individual recommendations, experiences, and scoops and lets communities discover their most reputable and popular businesses quickly.
Why did we decide to start Scoopl?
Our families are local business owners. The growth of the Internet brought with it a barrage of "review" sites that allowed users to anonymously review local businesses. Business owners were frustrated by not knowing who the customer was on the other side of the review. In the real world, if they had received a negative review face-to-face, owners would have worked with the customer to come to a mutually beneficial resolution. We believe these one-way review sites have harmed our local economies, not bettered.
Rather than using the Internet as an anonymous shield for angry customers, we wanted to build a site that mirrored our real world interactions with businesses and amplify it using the scale of the Internet. That's why we structured our sites around everyday types of communication relating to local businesses - the recommendations, scoops, and our experiences with local businesses.
Why now?
Because local economies matter most when our national economy struggles. Michael H. Shuman, author of Going Local said it best when he wrote: "Going local does not mean walling off the outside world. It Means nurturing locally owned businesses which use local resources sustainably, employ local workers at decent wages and serve primarily local consumers. It means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependant on imports. Control moves from the boardrooms of distant corporations and back into the community where it belongs."
